You’ve been in American Literature for 4.5 weeks now. How has the class been going for you so far?

 Prompt Response: Within my first 4.5 weeks in American literature, I have begun to feel more engaged and focused on the subject. I am starting to know what is going on in English and can keep up with my peers. I have enjoyed learning about creation myths and going into early American poetry. I have begun to be more focused and in the habit of doing my blog post as well. Overall, I am having a great start to this year in English class, ready to learn.

Summary: I am having a strong start in English this year with a good understanding.

Reflection: This year in English, I have begun to be much more engaged with the material because of Mr Rease's teaching style.

  Prompt Response:  Growing up similar to "The Rockpile," I was forbidden from going on the train tracks near my home. I was always told it was unsafe for many reasons: trains, drugs, and dangerous people. However, as I grew, I did what most kids tend to do: not listen. I decided to start exploring the what looked calm to me train tracks. I walked down the tracks all the time in new directions and further distances. It all seemed fine until about 6 months of hanging out down there, when I began to feel unsafe. Summary: My parents forbade me from going down to the train tracks growing up, similar to "The Rockpile." Reflection:  Kids often rebel and have to learn lessons on their own, even when told not to by a parent.

Think about the vocabulary words from Lesson Two. Write about a time you saw or heard one of these words outside of the classroom — maybe in a movie, song, social media post, or book. Describe how it was used and whether the context helped you understand the word better.

I am familiar with some of the words in this lesson, but one sticks out to me more than others. Metamorphosis, I have heard used in many movies and even some books. But the most vivid memories I have of the word being used has always been in alien or zombie movies. It pointed me into the right direction with the word, but never gave me the full understanding. In many movies and books, I have seen the word metamorphosis be used, giving me a general idea of the word, but never a full understanding. Questions like these caused me to think I need to pay more attention to the vocabulary I observed from books and media.

Write about a dream that felt real.

  Prompt Response:  I often don't dream, but when I do, they can be very vivid and clear. I had a dream not too long ago where I was running for my life. I was with a friend of mine, and someone had approached us aggressively. We ran through a city, then led to a forest. The last thing I remember is jumping down a rock, then I woke up in a gasp of air. Summary: I had a realistic dream of running from danger. Reflection:  Dreams can be very vivid, sometimes even making us question reality.
