Write about a time when you realized you needed to look out for yourself in a silly or harmless situation—maybe dodging a pop quiz, escaping a group chat argument, or remembering at the last second to submit an assignment. How did choosing wisely make your life easier?

Prompt Response:   One day in my Ap Us history class, I had this weird feeling that there might be a pop quiz, even though nobody else seemed worried. I quickly skimmed my notes before the bell rang, just in case. Then, the teacher handed out a quiz, and I was one of the only people who actually knew the answers. Taking a few minutes to look out for myself really paid off, because I felt prepared unlike the people around me. Summary: I had a gut feeling we where going to have a pop quiz so i reviewed my notes. Reflection:  Looking out for yourself is always benefical and its better to be safe than sorry.

Describe a time that you had an encounter with a homeless person, either directly or indirectly. What did you think and how did it make you feel?

Prompt Response:  I have had many encounters with various homeless people. At my local gas station, I see this guy who goes by "Slinky" once or twice a week. He has lived in our area for many years, and I try to help him out as much as I can. Helping him makes me feel good because many people turn their heads when he asks for help. I often think about why or how he got to that point; however, I don't judge and respect him, so I will not ask. Summary: I have a weekly interaction with a man named Slinky and help him out as much as I can. Reflection:  I always wonder how many people end up homeless and their story, and I try to help people out as much as I can.

Write about what you are thankful for.

Prompt Response:  I am thankful for many things in my life, and putting it into words can be difficult. However, I would start with Life, Family, Friends, Food, and music. Family and friends are one of the most important things in my life because of the support they provide. I am thankful for food because I am well-fed and have had the chance to try so many different things. Finally, I am thankful for music because it brings people together and there is always a song for every emotion or mood. Summary: I am thankful for  Life, Family, Friends, Food, and music.  Reflection:  I don't think about how lucky I  am to have these things and sometimes take them for granted.

The last scene forces readers to reinterpret Emily’s entire life. Write about a moment when new information changed your perception of a person or situation. How did that “plot twist” reshape your understanding, the same way Faulkner’s ending reshapes the story?

One time when I was in elementary school, the new kid had just came to our school. For the first few weeks he was quiet with no friends. Until one day in lunch when he looked at my pizza and said ew you eat meat. Following this all we did was talk. We created a very close friendship that we still keep today.   I met one of my best friends through a simple conversation changing my perception of who he was. You perception of people and things will always be constantly changing and the best thing you can do is understand and be open to change.

In “A Rose for Emily,” Miss Emily’s actions shock the reader—she kills her fiancé and keeps his body in her home for years. People often react with disbelief when they hear about real-life stories that seem just as unbelievable. Write about the most shocking or “craziest” news story you have ever heard. What happened, and why did it stand out to you? How did people react to it, and what does it reveal about human behavior?

I’ve read and watched many crazy news stories, and just looked at cases. For me, one stands out more than any other, the Ed gein case. That case sticks with me because of how many layers and un answered questions there are around it. It makes you question reality and all sense of morals. I think the ed gein is one of the scariest and most confusing cases of all time. Human behavior is confusing and scary, especially when you look into the crazier cases throughout history.

Miss Emily’s house once represented pride and tradition, but over time it became a symbol of decay and isolation. Describe a place that holds deep memories for you—positive or negative—and explain how it reflects part of who you are or how you’ve changed over time.

Many places in buildings in my life hold deep memories. For me one in specific stands out, the house I grew up in over in East lake. It holds memories for me from the age of consciousness to the age of seven. It shaped me as a person, because my childhood home and almost everything I’ve learned in life started or happened there. Every now and then I take the time to drive by and look at it very little has changed to the house, the same gravel driveway, the same colored porch, the same hydrangeas that were planted in the front yard years ago. For me the house I grew up in holds deep memories for me and who I am as a person. Finding appreciation in the little things in Lincoln good memories to places often can give a feeling nostalgia when seeing those places or bring you back to this feeling feelings.

Think about the vocabulary words from Lesson Two. Write about a time you saw or heard one of these words outside of the classroom — maybe in a movie, song, social media post, or book. Describe how it was used and whether the context helped you understand the word better.

I am familiar with some of the words in this lesson, but one sticks out to me more than others. Metamorphosis, I have heard used in many movies and even some books. But the most vivid memories I have of the word being used has always been in alien or zombie movies. It pointed me into the right direction with the word, but never gave me the full understanding. In many movies and books, I have seen the word metamorphosis be used, giving me a general idea of the word, but never a full understanding. Questions like these caused me to think I need to pay more attention to the vocabulary I observed from books and media.

Thinking about “The Rockpile,” which parent or guardian in your life has been the strictest when it comes to discipline? Explain how their approach to discipline has influenced you or shaped your behavior.

Prompt Response:  In my life, my dad has definitely been the strictest when growing up. He has always disciplined me strictly and sometimes unfairly. However, it has a lasting effect on my behavior and who I am today. I have been influenced positively in the way of making better decisions to stay out of trouble, but that also comes with its flaws. It has resulted in me sometimes just being sneaky because I feel like I can't be upfront with him. Summary: Growing up, my dad was strict, affecting who I am today. Reflection:  Being raised by a strict dad has had its ups and downs but overall has made me a better person.

Thinking about "The Rockpile," what is something your parents forbade you from doing when you were growing up? Explain what it was and why they might have set that rule.

Prompt Response:  Growing up similar to "The Rockpile," I was forbidden from going on the train tracks near my home. I was always told it was unsafe for many reasons: trains, drugs, and dangerous people. However, as I grew, I did what most kids tend to do: not listen. I decided to start exploring the what looked calm to me train tracks. I walked down the tracks all the time in new directions and further distances. It all seemed fine until about 6 months of hanging out down there, when I began to feel unsafe. Summary: My parents forbade me from going down to the train tracks growing up, similar to "The Rockpile." Reflection:  Kids often rebel and have to learn lessons on their own, even when told not to by a parent.

Words shape how we think, write, and interpret literature. Think about a time when learning a new word or understanding a specific term helped you better analyze a text, express an idea, or make your writing stronger.

Prompt Response:   Overall, there isn’t just one time I can describe when I learned a new word that helped make my writing stronger. However, my vocabulary has grown significantly and completely changed the way I write, speak, and analyze text. I think the new words I have learned have made me sound more intelligent and have allowed me to better express my ideas in more specific ways.  Summary: Learning new words has expanded my vocabulary and caused me to sound more intelligent. Reflection:   Learning new words and how to use them has allowed me to start reading more complicated text and books with deeper understanding.
