As the first semester comes to an end, take time to reflect on your learning and growth in this course. In a well-developed response, explain what you enjoyed most about the class, identify the project or assignment you found most engaging, and discuss which aspect of the course you connected with the most (such as poetry, fiction, writing, or discussion). Finally, reflect on one area where you feel you need additional support or improvement as we move into the spring semester.

Prompt Response:  This first half of the school year has really changed more than my whole time in high school. I have gone from a B-C student to an A-B. Ive grown in my effort, intelligence, and work ethic, affecting me in many ways. In American litterature I have enjoyed reading poetry and learning the meaning behind each piece and author. The only self criticism I have for myself is to get better at completing my blog post. Summary: I have grown alot in the first semester of my junior year. Reflection:  I have improved alot, but still need to continue improving on being on time and consistent with things such as my blog post.

Many holidays center around traditions. Describe one tradition that is important to you or your family and explain why it still matters (or why it no longer does).

Prompt Response:  Christmas is full of traditions for many. For me, it's about family and spending time with them. We always do something different; however, we still sit down together every year on Christmas Eve and watch movies. We also always open 1 present early to keep my little brother's excitement contained. Summary: My family always sits down together on Christmas Eve and watches a classic Christmas movie. Reflection:  I like having small traditions on christmas, but I also enjoy just focusing on doing new things with my family.

How have the holidays changed as you have grown older? Compare your experiences of the holidays during childhood with how you experience them now, focusing on shifts in perspective, responsibilities, or emotional meaning.

Prompt Response:  The holiday season has changed drastically for me since I was a child. I used to be excited and full of joy the whole month of December. I would love to do holiday activities and wait for Christmas. Now, I am happy for the season, but it has definitely changed. I still like Christmas and am more focused on seeing family and getting some clothes that I need. I am honestly more excited to just have a break from school and work. Summary: The holidays to me have become more of a relaxation break then exciting as ive grown older. Reflection:  I look back positively on the joy and excitement Christmas used to bring me, but I now am more just grateful for family and being provided with new things like clothes.

After watching the short film Identity, write a blog post reflecting on how the masks in the film represent the pressure to fit in and the struggle to discover who you really are. Choose one moment from the film that stood out to you and explain why. Then, connect the film’s message to Langston Hughes’ poem “I, Too” and to the mask you are creating in class. What part of your identity do you want your mask to reveal?

Prompt Response:  The film "Identity" uses the mask to symbolize the intense pressure from others to fit into society. Throughout the short film, the girl contemplates removing her mask; her struggle shows her accepting herself. Summary: The film represents how everyone hides behind a mask. Reflection:  The film strongly touches on the wayh that so many people fit in to society rather then being themselves.

In “I, Too,” the speaker expresses pride in his identity and his rightful place in America. Reflect on your own life: What aspect of your cultural identity are you most proud of, and why?

Prompt Response:   I am most proud of being born in the south, which has given me many experiences I don't think I would have had yet. The food of the South is one of my favorite things about it. I'm also grateful for having so many opportunities to go fishing, both deep sea and local ponds. Summary: I am proud to be from the South. Reflection:  Living in the south has given me my manners, food tastes, and the ability to fish in many different places.

In “We Real Cool,” the speakers make choices that seem exciting, bold, and rebellious, even though those choices lead to consequences. Write about a moment in your own life when you followed what looked cool or fun, only to realize afterwards that it wasn’t the smart or responsible path. What influenced your decision, and how did your perspective change later?

Prompt Response:   Last summer, my friends and I decided to sneak out and go swimming at the neighborhood pool late at night. It felt exciting and rebellious, especially since we knew it was risky. The adrenaline of being somewhere we weren’t supposed to be made the whole experience feel even more fun in the moment. Summary: My friends and I snuck out to our neighborhood pool, but got caught in the end. Reflection: In the moment, it was fun, but the next day the long conversation about safety and rules from my parents made me realize it was not worth it.

Discuss something meaningful or memorable you experienced over the break, or reflect on what you felt most thankful for during that time.

Prompt Response:  I had many meaningful experiences and moments over the break. Seeing almost all of my family together again was nice, I hadn't seen them in almost 2 years. We all drove up to Lake Martin in Alabama and stayed at my great aunt's house for Thanksgiving. We played competitive games that definitely made memories. Summary: I got to see alot of my family for Thanksgiving and made many memories. Reflection:  Thanksgiving is a holiday about seeing family and making memories and being thankful for one another.
